Exhibition Proposals

Thank you to everyone who came to the U7 Exhibition meeting today. From our discussion, it looks as if we have a few recurring themes. The idea of the mirror image as well as domestic images kept cropping up in the ideas we've had for work. And we're also still all interested in the idea of transition, from one room to another, as well as the absurd.

So far all the proposals fit together very well and should help to create two rooms that are reflections of each other but a little different. Whether you measure this by the passage of time, the size of objects or subtle changes in the images themselves, there will be a slightly surreal but familiar effect for visitors. The rooms should also look similar enough to be recognisably the same exhibition in the middle of many other pieces of U7 work, so we're really lucky to have two spaces. The exhibition title is working well at helping to curate all our work together into an eclectic mix that has a disjointed harmony.

Proposals are so far as follows:

Tomofumi: Will be using either a new or old image and would like to look the idea of copying this. For example, this could involve a painting in room one, which would change into a print of the same painting in room two.

Jessica: Looking at the idea of play but also wallpaper and drawing, both with regards to the idea of shadows and light. The work may be to produce a shadow effect or some wallpaper that touches on ideas of positive and negative and mirror images. Possibly using the window, which would create a fabulous grotto effect for the rest of the space and change it from just being the regular 2D studio.

Yasmin: Using clocks that will highlight the idea of moving from one space to the other. The clocks may be set to the same time but time catches up on you as you travel from one room to the next - and so the hands on the clock will be at different times every time you view them.

Shefali: Looking at the idea of nonsense, fun and surprise. Making a game / sculpture based on a children's toy that encourages the development of motor skills as you thread a mouse through holes in a large wedge of cheese. Maybe changing the size or colour for the second room.

Could everyone else who did not come upload their proposals to this blog before our next meeting on Wed the 15th. We have to all make sure that we come to the next meeting (apart from timetabled exceptions who are coming on Monday 20th afternoon) so that we can make a recording of our conversation and use this as a basis for the 1000 word written piece. It's also really important that we all get to see / hear everyone's proposals this week so we can start thinking about how the work will all fit together.

Next Wednesday, we need to bring images of work, or finished work, so that we can begin to think about curating this into the actual space. From what we talked about today it seems we have the chance to make something that looks wonderful, and that will give people a different kind of exhibition experience - but it will need to be curated carefully.

For our critical writing / conversation, it might also be useful to all have an idea about what we want to say / have a passage from a book to read / the titles of what we've been reading / notes about how this curation project has fitted in with our work.

We also need to start thinking about documentation / if we want to present the blog in any way - e.g printed into a magazine.

Really looking forward to seeing people's work next week! Our exhibition is going to look amazing.

Shefali
